2011 Bioethics Symposium

Our November Symposium featured world renowned speakers, and we felt blessed to have them take time out of their busy, professional lives to join us.
• Neurologist, psychiatrist and bioethicist Vincent Fortanasce M.D.
Ob/Gyn Mary L. Davenport M.D.
Attorney James A. Rainboldt, Esq.
Chief of Neurology at Olive-View-UCLA D. Alan Shewmom, M.D.
Executive Director of CALIF (Communities Actively Living Independent & Free)
Lillibeth E. Navarro B.A., B.S., M.A.
• Public policy and communications advisor Brian Johnston
Ob/Gyn Patrick J. Baggot M.D.

Six units of Continuing Education could be earned by attending, and many nurses took advantage of this opportunity. A DVD set of this symposium is currently being produced for sale.

Symposium attendee comments:
“The quality and expertise of the presenters were powerful.”
“Excellent quality of speakers and chosen topics.”
“I never realized all the complications for egg harvesting.”
“I will now speak out more than I currently do, and be ready with resources.”
“Learning how all of these issues tied together.”

D. Alan Shewmon M.D. one of our presenters and a world-famous expert on brain death, prefaced his talk by saying the same thing, “When I first saw the program, I wasn’t sure how the topics all related, but as the day progressed, I realized that the agenda was brilliantly put together.”

2011 Walk for Life
CNES were among the participants in the seventh annual Walk for Life West Coast held on the 38th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion. Over 40,000 citizens converged on San Francisco from all over the West Coast in support of the value and dignity of every human life.

Abby Johnson, who left her job as director of a Texas Planned Parenthood clinic in 2009 told the young people in the crowd,"You are the new generation of pro-lifers...It makes sense to be pro-life. It doesn't make sense to be pro-choice...Technology doesn't back it up...You're the movement. You're the next generation. This is our time; make it count."

CNES Gala October 23, 2010
The CNES membership, guests, and friends enjoyed wine-tasting, food, music, dancing, and fellowship under the stars at the home of our president, Zonya, at our fall fundraising event. Our speaker, Rebecca Kiessling gave her incredible story of being conceived in a violent rape, and how her mother sought unsuccessfully to abort her. The venue, a large patio overlooking the Fullerton golf course, was magical, and the predicted rain showers blessedly held off for the evening.

RECAP: Life Symposium 2010
Consequences of the Bio-Medical Revolution

If you were unable to make it to the conference co-sponsored by California Nurses for Ethical Standards held on May 1st, 2010 at Biola University, you missed an outstanding seminar. The topics were spot-on current, and the speakers were outstanding. We worried on Friday that attendance was going to be smaller than we hoped for, but our fears were proved unfounded when more than 80 participants showed up on Saturday morning.

Vincent Fortanasce M.D. started off the day with a very entertaining presentation regarding insights on Alzheimer’s and the DEAR program he’s developed for identifying risk factors and prevention of the disease. Some participants complained that he didn’t have enough time allotted. It’s true that he ran over and couldn’t fully address how euthanasia is becoming prominent for Alzheimer’s patients.

Fritz Baumgartner M.D. covered the Bioethics of the Human Embryo including an overview of different types of stem cells, fertilization and the important difference between conception and fertilization, and some interesting comparisons of today’s debate on the subject with what happened in Nazi Germany.

Betty Odello RN, BSN, MA explained the mechanics and ethics of genetic engineering and the newest developments in that fertile field. She also covered other dilemmas such as genetic testing, gene therapy, stem cell research, and transgenetics.

Christopher M. DeGiorgio M.D. discussed the history of conscience protection under the laws of the United States. He then went on to explain the threats to this protection today and how these threats will affect the medical profession in the future.

Kathleen Timm RN, MS, CNS, MAHCM spoke about the underlying issues at the heart of end of life decisions. She clarified the ethical differences in decisions which do support and those which do not support the dignity of the human person.

William A. Anderson, J.D. described the different legal documents that patients are asked to sign and their implications. He explained a fairly recent document, POLST (Physician’s Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment)/MOLST (Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment) that is working its way through various health care institutions. Proponents tout it as designed to improve the quality of care people receive at the end of life, but in fact it holds hidden dangers within.

CNES had fifteen nurses sign up for CE credit, and here is a sampling of some of their comments on the course evaluation form:

"This is THE best and most informative symposium that I have ever attended. All the speakers were extremely knowledgeable in their presentations and held my attention from beginning to end."

"Excellent speakers, please invite them again."

"Great, eloquent and inspiring speakers. Today’s symposium made me very proud to be a Catholic and as a result will do my best to utilize my knowledge and experience to protect life."

"It was wonderful to be in a room with ~80 same minded people - very empowering."

The sky was threatening, but they came. The sky got darker, and still they came. It started to rain, and still they came: tens of thousands from all over the U.S. and Canada, too. The crowd was estimated at 35 to 40,000. “Awesome!” “Fabulous!” “Life Changing!” “Marvelous!” “Those are just a few of the words that we’ve heard to describe the 6th Annual Walk for Life West Coast,” said Lisa Hamrick, one of the organizers.

Often huddled together under umbrellas as the pouring rain let loose from the Heavens, the rain never dampened the spirit and energy of the vast crowd assembled together. Several speaker including David Bereit, National Director of 40 Days for Life, Abby Johnson (a former director of a Planned Parenthood Clinic who had an amazing conversion to pro-life), and Paul Ginoux-Defermont,an organizer of the walk for life in Paris, France, who flew in to be with us!

CNES carries bannerThe mood was upbeat as the crowd started their 2½ mile trek from Justin Herman Plaza to the Marina Green Park. A sea of people as far as the eye could see marched as one, praying and singing along the way. It was a heartwarming, touching, beautiful sight. The sun came out as the first of the walkers reached the Park where food, festivities, and the information faire awaited them. Our CNES table was set up and ready for business. It was exciting to see the interest we attracted; lots of information handed out. Sure hope you can join us next year. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.

Rev. Clenard Childress Jr.The sixth annual Walk for Life West Coast’s 2010’s motto was “Abortion Hurts Women.”

Rev. Clenard Childress, Director of LEARN, rallied the crowd before everyone left the Plaza for the Walk:

“You are the only movement that can bring America back to its’ rightful place. You are the only movement that says ‘we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all mankind is created equal’. . . You believe that! You believe that all of our citizens have the right and should have access to the dream and the right to life!”
